Welding

One Ranchero ready for cancer treatment on the passenger compartment floorpans. No, that is not the planned exhaust system for this vehicle. That monster is off of Kurt's '56 Wagon. But its almost as long from the manifold to the rear of the tips as this little vehicle.

One 13 year old eager to drive. So what if the driver's seat is a milk crate. We aren't pushing that far. The trick here is to put the vehicle on the lift for the doctor.

Dad marked where to cut and let the kid do the actual cutting with the cutoff disk.

They decided to do the passenger floorpan first as it was in the worst condition. The objective was to locate the braces underneath without cutting through them.

Now to remove the old floorpan from the top of the brace. Dad got to handle the tricky part.

The hump at the back of the passenger compartment shows the rust.

The rear panel and floorpan behind the driver seat are rusted through, to the bed and the floor. Note the rust in the dogleg at the corner of the door. All Dad could say was "Here we go again."

The area behind the passenger seat is just as bad.

The new floorpan sitting in place. It didn't fit quite right, so they made a few adjustments to get a better fit.

The passenger door rear dogleg is worse than the driver side.

A second picture of the passenger side dogleg.

While we had it up on the lift, we checked the undercarriage again. Overall, not too bad.

The rest of the undercarriage.

Driver side front wheel assembly. Note the rust hole in the driver floorpan.

Passenger side front wheel assembly. Smaller rust hole, same cobwebs.

POR 15 applied, along with Weld-Thru primer for the braces and body areas. The area is prepped, but installation is going to wait until the toe kick area is cut, prepped, and ready as well.

In the meantime, spot weld holes are drilled and screws will be used to hold the floorpan in place.

The kids tries his hand at drilling the spot weld/screw holes. Honestly, he did very good. It helps that this is HIS car-truck-vehicle-whatever that he is working on.

One passenger floorpan ready for welding, screwed into place. Time for the driver side.
